Apresidential election was held inMississippi from November 3–4, 1840 as part of the1840 United States presidential election.[1] Voters chose four representatives, or electors to theElectoral College, who voted forPresident andVice President.
Mississippi voted for theWhig candidate,William Henry Harrison, overDemocratic candidateMartin Van Buren. Harrison won Mississippi by a margin of 6.86%. As of2024, this is the only presidential election in American history in which Mississippi has voted for a different candidate thanAlabama. This would also be the last time a Democrat (or Democratic splinter) candidate lost Mississippi until 1872.
