The1824 North Carolina gubernatorial election was held on December 2, 1824, in order to elect theGovernor of North Carolina.Democratic-Republican candidate and former member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromNorth Carolina's 2nd districtHutchins Gordon Burton was elected by theNorth Carolina General Assembly againstDemocratic-Republican candidate and formerUnited States Senator fromNorth CarolinaMontfort Stokes, candidate Alfred Moore andDemocratic-Republican candidate Isaac T. Avery.[1]
On election day, December 2, 1824,Democratic-Republican candidateHutchins Gordon Burton was elected by theNorth Carolina General Assembly by a margin of 53 votes against his foremost opponent fellowDemocratic-Republican candidateMontfort Stokes, thereby retaining Democratic-Republican control over the office of Governor. Burton was sworn in as the 22ndGovernor of North Carolina on December 7, 1824.[2]
