Agubernatorial election was held inVirginia on December 10, 1822.[4] The juniorU.S. senator from VirginiaJames Pleasants defeated the member of theVirginia House of Delegates fromHenrico CountyGeorge Hay and thespeaker of the Virginia House of DelegatesLinn Banks.[1]
The incumbentgovernor of VirginiaThomas Mann Randolph Jr. was ineligible for re-election due to term limits established by theConstitution of Virginia. The election was conducted by theVirginia General Assembly in joint session.[3] The formerpresident of the United StatesJames Madison was nominated in the House of Delegates, but declined to run.[4] Pleasants was elected with a majority on the first ballot.[1]
