The1821 Vermont gubernatorial election took place on September 4, 1821.[1] It resulted in the election ofRichard Skinner to a one-year termas governor.[2]

TheVermont General Assembly met inMontpelier on October 11.[2] TheVermont House of Representatives appointed a committee to review the votes of thefreemen of Vermont for governor, lieutenant governor, treasurer, and members of the governor's council.[2] With the Federalist Party defunct, Democratic-RepublicanRichard Skinner was the only major candidate.[2] The committee determined that Skinner had easily won a second one-year term against only scattering opposition.[2]

In the election for lieutenant governor, the committee determined that Democratic-RepublicanWilliam Cahoon, who was unopposed, had won election to a second one-year term.[3] The vote totals were recorded as 11,817 (98.8%) for Cahoon, with 146 (1.2%) scattering.[4]

Benjamin Swan was unopposed for election to a one-year term as treasurer, his twenty-second.[2] Though nominally aFederalist, Swan was usually endorsed by the Democratic-Republicans and often ran unopposed.[5] Vote totals for the 1821 election were recorded as 10,637 (99.6%) for Swan and 41 (0.04%) scattering.[5]

In the race for governor, the results of the popular vote were reported as follows.[2]
