January 27 –March 18 –Jane Austen begins, but abandons her novelSanditon ("Three Brothers").^[1]
February 12 –Junius Brutus Booth makes his stage debut in the title role of Shakespeare'sRichard III at theTheatre Royal, Covent Garden in London.^[2]
February 20 –Junius Brutus Booth asIago plays oppositeEdmund Kean in the title role ofOthello at theTheatre Royal, Drury Lane in London.^[2]
March –Percy andMary Shelley withClaire Clairmont and the latter's new daughter byLord Byron,Allegra (at this time calledAlba), having moved fromBath, begin a year's residence inMarlow, Buckinghamshire, England, where Mary completesFrankenstein and gives birth to her third child, and Percy writesThe Revolt of Islam.^[3]
April 1 –Blackwood's Magazine is launched as theEdinburgh Monthly Magazine. In October the publisher,William Blackwood, relaunches it asBlackwood's Edinburgh Magazine.
August 6 –Gas lighting on stage is introduced in London'sEnglish Opera House (extended to the auditorium on September 8). On September 6 it is introduced at theTheatre Royal, Drury Lane, where it has already been installed in the auditorium and foyer, and theTheatre Royal, Covent Garden, as a demonstration.^[4]
December 18 –20 –William Hone successfully defends himself in a London court on charges arising from his publication of political satires.
December 28 – English painterBenjamin Haydon introducesJohn Keats toWilliam Wordsworth andCharles Lamb at a dinner in London to celebrate progress on his paintingChrist's Entry into Jerusalem, in which all feature.^[5]
December 31 –Walter Scott's historical novelRob Roy, written from this spring, is published anonymously byArchibald Constable in Edinburgh, while a shipload of copies is carried fromLeith to London for simultaneous publication there byLongman.^[6]
December –Jane Austen's first and last completed novels, respectivelyNorthanger Abbey andPersuasion are published together byJohn Murray in London (dated 1818), six months after the author's death atWinchester. Her brother Henry Austen contributes a biographical note, which first publicly identifies her as the author of her previously anonymous novels. She had earned £684 in her lifetime from her writing.
