Agubernatorial election was held inVirginia on December 4, 1817. The incumbentgovernor of VirginiaJames Patton Preston was re-elected without opposition.[1]

The election was conducted by theVirginia General Assembly in joint session.[3] Preston was elected with a majority on the first ballot.[1]
