Agubernatorial election was held inVirginia on December 4, 1817. The incumbentgovernor of Virginia James Patton Preston was re-elected without opposition.^[1]

The election was conducted by theVirginia General Assembly in joint session.^[3] Preston was elected with a majority on the first ballot.^[1]
