The1801 Maryland gubernatorial election was held on 9 November 1801 in order to elect theGovernor of Maryland.Democratic-Republican nominee and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives fromMaryland's 2nd districtJohn Francis Mercer was elected by theMaryland General Assembly against his opponentFederalist nominee James Murray.[1]

On election day, 9 November 1801,Democratic-Republican nomineeJohn Francis Mercer was elected by theMaryland General Assembly, thereby gaining Democratic-Republican control over the office of governor. Mercer was sworn in as the 10thGovernor of Maryland on 10 November 1801.[2]
