The1796 Kentucky gubernatorial election was held on 27 May 1795 in order to elect theGovernor of Kentucky.Democratic-Republican candidateJames Garrard was elected on the second ballot by an electoral college vote against fellowDemocratic-Republican candidatesBenjamin Logan,Thomas Todd andJohn Brown. The exact results of the second ballot are unknown.[1]
Until 1800, Kentucky elected its governors through electors who were chosen via popular vote from the same districts as theKentucky House of Representatives.[2]
On election day, 27 May 1795,Democratic-Republican nomineeJames Garrard won the election after being chosen by an electoral college vote on the second ballot, thereby retaining Democratic-Republican control over the office of Governor. Garrard was sworn in as the 2ndGovernor of Kentucky on 7 June 1796.[3]
