Asteroid
1576 Fabiola , provisional designation1948 SA , is a Themistianasteroid from the outer regions of theasteroid belt , approximately 27 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 30 September 1948, by Belgian astronomerSylvain Arend at theRoyal Observatory of Belgium in Uccle.[ 15] The asteroid was named afterQueen Fabiola of Belgium .[ 2]
Orbit and classification [ edit ] Fabiola is a Themistian asteroid that belongs to theThemis family (602 ), a very largefamily of carbonaceous asteroids, named after24 Themis .[ 3] [ 4] [ 16] It orbits the Sun in theouter main-belt at a distance of 2.6–3.7 AU once every 5 years and 7 months (2,042 days). Its orbit has aneccentricity of 0.17 and aninclination of 1° with respect to theecliptic .[ 1]
The asteroid was first identified as1931 RV atSimeiz Observatory in September 1931. The body'sobservation arc begins with its identification as1931 TQ2 atLowell Observatory in October 1931, almost 17 years prior to its official discovery observation at Uccle.[ 15]
Physical characteristics [ edit ] In theTholen classification ,Fabiola has an ambiguousspectral type , similar to theB-type asteroids ("bright" carbonaceous asteroids), yet with an "unusual" spectra (BU).[ 1]
In November 1976, a rotationallightcurve ofFabiola was obtained from photometric observations by Swedish astronomerClaes-Ingvar Lagerkvist atUppsala Observatory . Lightcurve analysis gave arotation period of 6.7 hours with a brightness amplitude of 0.2magnitude (U=2 ).[ 13]
Diameter and albedo [ edit ] According to the surveys carried out by the Infrared Astronomical SatelliteIRAS , the JapaneseAkari satellite and theNEOWISE mission of NASA'sWide-field Infrared Survey Explorer ,Fabiola measures between 21.33 and 30.150 kilometers in diameter and its surface has analbedo between 0.0746 and 0.123.[ 5] [ 6] [ 7] [ 8] [ 9] [ 10] [ 11] [ 12]
TheCollaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link adopts the results obtained by IRAS, that is, an albedo of 0.0913 and a diameter of 27.25 kilometers based on anabsolute magnitude of 11.04.[ 3] [ 8]
Thisminor planet was named afterQueen Fabiola of Belgium (1928–2014).[ 2] The officialnaming citation was published by theMinor Planet Center on 31 January 1962 (M.P.C. 2116 ).[ 17]
