L with double bar (Ⱡⱡ) is an additional letter used in the writing of theKutenai language in Canada and someChimbu–Wahgi languages like theMelpa andNii languages inPapua New Guinea, composed of anL with two horizontalbars.
Ⱡ is used inKutenai to represent thevoiceless alveolar lateral fricative[ɬ].[1] In practical usage, it is commonly replaced with thedoubly barred vertical pipe⟨ǂ⟩.
Ⱡ was initially used as an alternative to belted l⟨ɬ⟩, mostly in handwriting and was preferred by Kutenai-language teachers in the 1990s.[2]
Ⱡ is used inMelpa andNii to represent a velar lateral[ʟ] or[𝼄].
Ⱡ replacedl with bar⟨ƚ⟩ in Nii from 1980-1990s.[3]
