Ḫāʾ,Khāʾ, orXe (خ, transliterated asḫ (DIN-31635),ḵ (Hans Wehr),kh (ALA-LC) orẖ (ISO 233)) is one of the six letters theArabic alphabet added to the twenty-two inherited from thePhoenician alphabet (the others beingṯāʼ,ḏāl,ḍād,ẓāʼ,ġayn). It is based on theḥāʾ ح. It is related to theAncient North Arabian 𐪍,South Arabian𐩭, andGe'ezኀ.
It represents the sound[x] or[χ] inModern Standard Arabic. The pronunciation ofخ is very similar to German, Irish, and Polish unpalatalised "ch",[1] Russianх (Cyrillic Kha), Greekχ andPeninsular Spanish andSouthern Cone "j". In name and shape, it is a variant ofḥāʾ.South Semitic also kept the phoneme separate, and it appears asSouth Arabian
,Ge'ezḪarm ኀ. Its numerical value is 600 (seeAbjad numerals). In most European languages, it is mostly romanized as thedigraphkh.
When representing this sound in transliteration of Arabic into Hebrew, it is written as ח׳.
The most common transliteration in English is "kh", e.g.Khartoum (الخرطومal-Kharṭūm),Sheikh (شيخ).
