β-Carboline, also known asnorharman or as9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole, is atricyclicchemical compound andalkaloid.[1] It is theparent structure of thesubstituted β-carbolines, a large group of alkaloids andsynthetic compounds.[1] β-Carboline may be thought of as acyclized tryptamine.[1] The compound has been found to possess a variety ofpharmacological activities, includingDNAmutagenic effects,imidazoline receptor interactions,serotonin reuptake inhibition,monoamine oxidase inhibition,cytochrome P450enzymeinhibition, and inhibition of other enzymes, among others.[1]
