TheŠčavnica (pronounced[ˈʃtʃáːwnitsa]; German:Stainz) is a 56-kilometer (35 mi)river inStyria,Slovenia.[1] It sources nearZgornja Velka and flows along theSlovene Hills towards the southeast. It passesNegova Castle andSveti Jurij ob Ščavnici, traversesLake Gajševci (Slovene:Gajševsko jezero) and the town ofLjutomer, and finally joins theMur from the right inRazkrižje.
The Ščavnica is one of the most heavily polluted rivers in Slovenia.[citation needed]
