Östergarn (Swedish pronunciation:[ˈœ̂sːtɛrˌɡɑːɳ])[3] is a populated area, asocken (not to be confused withparish), on the Swedish island ofGotland.[4] It comprises the same area as theadministrative Östergarn District, established on 1 January 2016.[5]
Östergarn is situated on a peninsula on the central part of eastern Gotland. The area has several lowplateaus, the two major ones areGrogarnsberget andÖstergarnsberget.[6][7] ThemedievalÖstergarn Church is located in thesocken.[8] As of 2019[update], Östergarn Church belongs to Östergarnparish in Romaklosterspastorat, along with the churches inGammelgarn,Kräklingbo,Anga andAla.[9][10]
The harbor villageKatthammarsvik is on the north coast of Östergarn and theHerrvikfishing village is on the eastern tip of the peninsula. About 4 km (2.5 mi) northeast of Herrvik is theÖstergarnsholm island with its twolighthouses.[11] The island is about 200 ha (490 acres).[6] Along the southern coast is the SandvikenNatura 2000nature reserve with its long, sandy beach.[12][13]
