The grape is one of the two native grape varieties ofElazığ Province (the other one isBoğazkere), located on theAnatolian plateau at the north of theTaurus Mountains. The various sources of theEuphrates River in this region soften the normally harsh climate ofEastern Turkey.
Öküzgözü has rounded, dark-colored grapes, which are the largest among the grape varieties grown in Turkey. TheTurkish wordöküzgözü literally means "ox eye."
