Época was a Spanish weeklynews magazine published inMadrid,Spain, from 1985 to 2013.[1]

History and profile

Established byJaime Campmany in 1985,Época was aconservative publication byIntereconomía Corporation.[1][2] TheUS Department of State also described the magazine as a conservative publication in 2000.[3] The headquarters of the magazine was in Madrid.[4]

In 1994Época had a circulation of 67,000 copies.[5]

Época becameLa Gaceta'sSunday magazine in 2009,[6] butLa Gaceta was defunct by Intereconomía in 2013.[7] It had among its contributorsJulián Marías, Ramón Pi,Pilar Urbano,Emilio Romero,Manuel Alcántara andRicardo de la Cierva.[2]

Although described by its publisher as "a reference,"[1]Época was the focus of several controversies in the 2000s. In 2008, it alleged thatInfanta Elena was trying to annul her marriage toJaime de Marichalar in that Marichalar usedcocaine.[8] In the following year, the magazines accusedMaría Teresa Fernández de la Vega ofelectoral fraud for including her name after the legal period of the election.[9] Both Marichalar and de la Vega opened legal actions against the magazine.[9][10]
