TheÉislek (Luxembourgish:[ˈɜɪ̯s.lek]), also known by itsGerman nameÖsling orOesling, is a region covering the northern part of both theGrand Duchy of Luxembourg andEifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm, within the greaterArdennes area that also covers parts ofBelgium andFrance. The Éislek covers 32% of the territory of Luxembourg; to the south of the Éislek lies theGutland (literally "Good Land"), which covers the remaining 68% of the Grand Duchy[1][2] as well as the southern part of the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm.
The region is characterised by hills and largedeciduous forests. Almost all of Luxembourg's tallest hills are in the Éislek, particularly in the north and north-west, near the borders with Belgium andGermany. Its main hill chains are cut by scenic river valleys, most notable those of theClerve,Our,upper Sauer, andWiltz.
The Éislek is sparsely populated, with few larger towns;[citation needed]Clervaux,Vianden andWiltz are the largest ones in the Luxembourgish part of the Éislek,[2] of which only Wiltz has a population of over 6,000 people. The area is known for its hill-side villages, which rely upon the visitors that the tourist season brings.[citation needed]
In the late 18th century, a rural popular rising against theFrench Revolutionary forces was centered upon the Éislek area.
InWorld War II, theBattle of the Bulge was partly fought in the region in late 1944 and early 1945.
In the2004 general election, theFree Party of Luxembourg, a smallregionalist party based in the Éislek and led by local personalityJean Ersfeld, offered candidates, but none were elected. The party had difficulty in continuing to organize after the election.
