The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne

The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne is an oil-on-panel painting byLeonardo da Vinci, painted around 1501 to 1519. It depictsSaint Anne, her daughter theVirgin Mary, and theinfant Jesus. Christ is shown grappling with a sacrificial lamb on the edge of a precipice, symbolizing hisPassion. It is likely that the painting was commissioned byKing Louis XII of France following the birth of his daughterClaude in 1499, but it was never delivered to him. Leonardo explored incorporating these figures together through preparatory works including theBurlington House Cartoon, now in theNational Gallery, London, and a drawing which resides in theLouvre, Paris. The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne is also in the Louvre.
