FromGermanTinte, ultimately fromMedieval Latinaquatīncta(colored water, liquid), fromtīnctus, perfect passive participle oftingere(to moisten; to dye, to colo(u)r). First attested in 1869.[2]

Replacedplakk, an earlier borrowing fromMiddle Low Germanblack((black) ink). A native neologismmustlik (frommust(black); compareRussianчерни́ла(černíla,ink), fromчёрный(čórnyj,black)) has also been attested, but has not reached widespread use. In the 1715 translation of the New Testament, the sense was translated asraamatu must (literally,book black).[3][4]
