editEtymology
editUnknown. Cognate toPortugueselesto(“agile”),Catalanllest(“clever; ready”),Italianlesto(“quick”),Malteselest(“ready”).
- If "clever" be the original sense, probably fromProto-Germanic*listiz; compareOld High German andOld Englishlist, both "knowledge, experience, cunning, art, trick, slyness" (see Englishlist). A semantic development "clever" → "quick" → "ready" is very plausible, but note that the association with "cleverness" apparently exists only in Catalan, Ladino and Spanish (and might thus be secondary). Note alsoIrishcliste(“clever”).
- Alternatively, perhaps from aVulgar Latin*lextus or*lestus, reduced from*lexitus, as an alteration ofLatinlēctus(“chosen; read”), participle oflegō.

editlisto (Hebrew spellingליסטו)[1]
- clever;shrewd;smart(withser)
