koorts

editEtymology
editFromMiddle Dutchcoorts, corts, curts. Related toMiddle Low Germankorts(“fever”), possibly abbreviated from a phrase containingkorts(“short”), fromMiddle High Germankurz.
An indirect relationship withkool(“coal”) has been suggested, viaProto-Indo-European*ǵwelH-(“burn, shine”); compareSanskritज्वलति(jválati,“burn brightly, blaze”) andजूर्ति(jūrti,“fever”). But this is quite speculative as all Germanic derivatives of this root have the sense of "coal", and it is formally unlikely.
