Usage notes

edit
  • Spelledevery one when referring separately to every person or thing in a specified group:There were three patients and she helpedevery one [of them]. In such cases it cannot be replaced witheverybody without changing the sense.
  • Everyone takes a singular verb:Is everyone here?;Everyonehas heard of it. However, similar to what occurs with collective or group nouns likecrowd orteam, sometimes a plural pronoun refers back toeveryone which is also reflected in verb conjugations:Everyonewas laughing at first, but thenthey all stopped. /Everyonehas a smart phone nowadays, don'tthey?
  • In colloquial speech it is common to sayeveryone is not X instead ofnot everyone is X (both of which may potentially have the intended meaning thatmost people are not X). The same is true of other universal qualifiers such aseverybody, everything, all.
