Etymology

Shortening of dialectaldēt (South Gheg), from archaic Arbëreshëdejt, dejët, fromProto-Albanian*deubeta, from pre-Albanian *dʰéubʰetos, enlargement ofProto-Indo-European*dʰewbʰos(deep), from*dʰewbʰ- (compareEnglishdeep,Lithuaniandubùs). Hyllested proposes a loanword from Greekδέλτα.[1]

Alternatively reconstructed as from dejët < deët < *débeti- < *dábeti- < *dáu̯bati- "depth" or *débita- < Pre-Proto-Albanian *dábita < *dáu̯beta- "deep" < PIE *dʰeu̯bʰeto- "sea".[2]
