Via other European languages, ultimately from the name of a temple in that area, dedicated toἩρακλῆς(Hēraklês)Μόνοικος(Mónoikos) “Herakles (Hercules) Monoikos” (it is said that Hercules passed through Monaco at some point), fromAncient Greekμόνος(mónos,single, alone) andοἶκος(oîkos,house); the name was later extended to the 6th-century-BC colony ofPhocaeans, where the temple was located.
