Etymology

edit

Uncertain; popularly thought to derive from acompound ofmētztli(moon) +‎xīctli(navel) +‎-co(locative suffix), which would yield*Mēxxīcco(literallyplace on the moon’s navel). The formMēxihco would thus imply thedegemination of[ʃː] and thedissimilation of[kk] to[ʔk], with the appearance of theglottal stop automatically triggering the shortening of the preceding[iː] to[i].
