  1. (astronomy) The fifth and by far the largestplanet in theSolar System, agas giant, represented by the symbol inastronomy. Jupiter is known for itsGreat Red Spot and manymoons including theGalilean moons.
  2. (Romanmythology) The King of the Gods, also calledJove. Equivalent to the GreekZeus, Jupiter was one of the children ofSaturn. As supreme god of the Roman pantheon, Jupiter was the god of thunder, lightning, and storms, and appropriately called the god of light and sky.
  3. (informal) The largest of a group of things or a region.
    Brazil could be considered theJupiter of South America.
  4. A number of places in theUnited States:
    1. Anunincorporated community inTuolumne County,California, named after a mine.
    2. Atown inPalm Beach County,Florida, named in error after the Roman god.
    3. Atownship inKittson County,Minnesota, named after the planet.
