Etymology

edit

Borrowed fromDanishHaffredall, originallyderived fromOld DanishHawærydh. The original being acompound ofhave(pasture) +‎ryd(clearing).[1]

Then shortened to"Haverda", via the parish dialect to"Haverd", plus the added plural suffix-a (For unkown reason many place-names are in plural form, despite often referring to a single feature.[2]).[1]

"Haverda" was then, viafolk etymology, transformed to its contemporary form"Haverdal"; wheredal means "dale" or "valley".[1]

The original formHawærydh is first attested in 1466.[1] Thedal(dale) form is attested since 1603 asHaffredall.[1]
