FromLatinAustria, a Latinization ofOld High GermanŌstarrīhhi (the first element of which means "east" and stems fromProto-Germanic*austraz(eastern), and the second element of which isrīhhi(realm). Seeeast,eastern for more.

Distantly cognate toAustralia: it derives from the same Proto-Indo-European root, but via Latin, where it came to mean “south” rather than “east”. Compare alsoAustrasia.

The first element of the High German word isProto-Germanic*austraz(eastern), cognate with Latinauster, but of different sense. The formation nevertheless makes sense because Austria is located in the south-east of the German-speaking lands.
