Etymology

FromMiddle Chinese社會 (MC dzyaeX hwajH, “publicgathering foroffering to thegod ofearth”), as a compound composed of(dzyaeX,god of earth;ceremony for offering to the god of earth) +(gathering). The word was repurposed byFukuchi Gen'ichirō in 1875 to translate the western concept ofsociety.[1]
