Wells is an Emmy and Annie Award-winning writer and actor for the TV showRobot Chicken, including theEmmy-nominatedRobot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II.[3] He later directed thesixth andseventh seasons ofRobot Chicken.

Wells has written numerous titles forMarvel Comics, includingHeroes for Hire,Civil War: Young Avengers/Runaways, and variousSpider-Man titles.[4] In 2006, Wells signed an exclusive contract with Marvel.[5] He then wroteVenom: Dark Origin telling the origin ofEddie Brock and the eponymoussymbiote,[6] as well as theDark Reign:Elektra tie-in series.[7]

He wrote twenty of the first twenty-one issues of the third volume ofNew Mutants, a series he launched with artist Diogenes Neves, including a tie-in to the "Necrosha" storyline.[8] Being published in parallel with that series wasAmazing Spider-Man Presents:Anti-Venom – New Ways To Live.[9]

Wells launched the seriesAvenging Spider-Man with artistJoe Madureira in November 2011.[10] He later wrote twoCarnage miniseries with artistClayton Crain:Carnage: Family Feud andCarnage: U.S.A.

In 2015 Wells co-created the stop-motion animated comedy television seriesSuperMansion and directed the first season.

In 2021, Wells was announced as one of the writers for theAmazing Spider-Man: Beyond storyline.[11] In April 2022, Wells took over as lead writer forThe Amazing Spider-Man along with artistJohn Romita Jr.[12] The book was relaunched with a new #1 after theBeyond storyline, making it the sixth new #1 for the title. In 2023, Wells claimed that Marvel Editorial warned him not to attend any comic conventions after the release of #26 due to a surprising plot twist in the issue (later revealed to be the death ofMs. Marvel).[13] Wells' run has come under scrutiny from both fans and critics, particularly for the dissolution of Peter Parker andMary Jane Watson's relationship, Mary Jane's new love interest Paul Rabin, and Ms. Marvel's death and subsequent resurrection, which has been criticized asfridging.[14] Andrew Cutler ofComic Book Resources claimed that the series "needs a course correction" and that "the creative team must make changes to improve the overall quality of the storytelling".[15]
