Welcome toWikiProject Women in Red (WiR)! |
---|
Our objective is to turnred links intoblue ones. Our project's scope is women's representation on all language Wikipedias (biographies, women's works, women's issues, broadly construed). Did you know that, according toHumaniki, only20.13% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women? Not impressed?Content gender gap is a form ofsystemic bias, and this is what WiR addresses. We invite you to participate, whenever you like, in whatever way suits you and your schedule. Editors of all genders are equally and warmly welcome at Women in Red! |

In March 2024, Women in Red wants to make it easier to find women and non-binary people on Wikipedia. This is a new event! We hope both inexperienced and seasoned editors will join us in creating redirects and adding categories and wikilinks to make it easier to find women.
Here are some ways you can make it easier to find women:
- Add categories including relevant subcategories ofCategory:Women
- Add wikilinks on other pages to the page such as a relevant list of people (e.g. "List of women writers", "List of [nationality] writers"), or check theFind Link tool and see if you can find her on other pages
- Create redirects from alternative names (e.g. her performance name, birth name, pseudonym) (seeinformation about redirects here)
This virtual editathon allows enthusiasts wherever they may be to participate in our initiative. Contributors are of course also welcome to work on articles or add new articles about any other women who deserve to be covered, for example under the topics of the month or our comprehensive #1day1woman priority.
Themain goals of the event are:
- to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia (in an easier way than creating new biographies!)
- to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works.
Useful tips and links
editFor this event, you'll be working on existing articles so we don't have our usual lists of redlinks.
Useful tips for a starting point:
- Guidance: You can find Wikipedia'sguidance on redirects here, guidance on categories here andguidance on wikilinking here. If you have any questions or are finding anything confusing, post on theWomen in Red talk page and experienced editors will be happy to help you.
- Surnames: Adding someone to the relevant surname page (or making a redirect from her surname if she's the only name-holder) is really useful. It helps the reader who only knows a surname, and reminds people that there are Janes and Georginas in among all the Johns and Georges. For examples of a surname page, seeHanson (surname),List of people with surname Miller orList of people with surname Peña.
- Checking for redirects: To find out whether an article already has existing redirects, click on "What links here" (likely on the right-hand side of the screen, under Tools) and then look for them. It helps if you've installed the userscript which displays all redirects in green,User:Anomie/linkclassifier, as you can then see redirects easily, but isn't essential.
- For more guidance: Read the essay onWriting women into the encyclopedia describing howwriting about women on Wikipedia doesn't stop after you've created a biography. This essay gives great suggestions on additional categories to add, where to add links, and more.
Here are some links that can help you identify articles to work on, and feel free to add more:
- Articles needing additional categories to help identify articles that are missing categories
- Orphaned articles about women artists
- Orphaned articles about women scientists
- Orphaned articles about women writers
- Orphaned articles about women's history
- Look at articles created in past WiR EditathonsTalkpage suggestion to adopt-an-editathon
