RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

[edit]

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is nowno longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improvingRfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated byHouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box atWikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and3b, initiated byBarkeep49 andUsedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated bySilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and6d, initiated byBilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated byLee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated byReaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c,21, and21b, initiated byCity of Silver,Ritchie333, andHouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated byNovem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated byKusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and16c, initiated byThebiguglyalien andSoni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at theadministrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated byBilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated bySchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated bytheleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated bySportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of theoptional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated byFemke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated byWereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated byHouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please seeWikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing!theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on itsMeta page and view itsprivacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Version history

[edit]

@DaGizza, Hi, I appreciate your willingness to support the editors. When I started to work on this articleAdeola Akinremi. I think that was in late 2023. I erroneously listed a wrong birthday, which I have since realized it was my error. Due to Google crawling it, I am asking for your help to have it removed. You can notice when you search for the name in Google browser that a date of birth appears under the overview but not in the article itself and there is no other official record for it publicly. I can tell that Google crawsl it from all version history that contains it and I'm mindful of resort to legal recourse. Can you please help delete the version history so that Google stops crawling it. Thank you!Mindfield1979 (talk)17:26, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, DaGizza. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have atemporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects theautoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. OnSpecial:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should useSpecial:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access isgenerally not allowed (e.g.~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward3RR, but notHey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • SeeWikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via theUser Info card, available inPreferences →Appearance →Advanced options →TickEnable theuser info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly,Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.
