Thisted Municipality (Danish:Thisted Kommune) is akommune inNorth Jutland Region,Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 1,072 km², and has a total population of 42,989 (2024). The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town ofThisted.

On 1 January 2007 Thisted municipality was, as the result ofKommunalreformen ("The Municipal Reform" of 2007), merged withHanstholm andSydthy municipalities to form a new Thisted municipality.

Thy
editThisted municipality is roughly identical with the traditional district ofThy, except that the municipality includes a small portion of the districtHanherred, but not the southernmost peninsula of Thy,Thyholm.
Potential name change
editIn November 2023, the municipal council voted, by 17 to 10, to advance with a proposal to change the name of the municipality toThy Municipality. The next step is to have a feel among the citizens to see whether it should be changed. A final decision is set to take place on February 27, 2024.[2][3]
