The Pitt is an Americanmedical drama series created byR. Scott Gemmill that premiered onMax on January 9, 2025.[1][2] Each episode of the season covers one hour of a single 15-houremergency department shift at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital.[3] In February 2025, the series was renewed for a second season.[4]

When a four-year-old child is brought into The Pitt after accidentally ingesting one of his father'sweed gummies, Langdon and King have to manage his irate mother while ensuring the family receives the required intervention from Children's Services. Robby must go against his morals when the children of an elderly man withpneumonia, Mr. Spencer, decide tooverride hisdo not resuscitate orders and pursue treatment that could lead to a slower, more painful death. Other cases include an unhoused man who arrives with a coat full of rats, a man with an electric dog collar glued to his neck, and a man who got into a scooter accident while not wearing a helmet. Javadi clashes with Santos, and learns about McKay's life as a single mother and doctor, but is shocked to find that McKay wears an ankle monitor. Third year resident Samira Mohan correctly identifies that a woman who presented with crippling pain was not a drug addict seeking a fix but instead dealing withsickle cell disease. Despite Whitaker's best efforts, he is unable to resuscitate Mr. Milton, and struggles to process his first-ever death of a patient. Javadi unsuccessfully tries to learn more about McKay from Langdon. Robby orders unnecessary tests for Nick to give his parents time to accept the inevitable. Nick's father clashes with one of Javadi's patients, Jenna, who took fentanyl with Nick but has recovered. Minu works out that Collins is pregnant, but she remains guarded when discussing her personal life with Robby. Collins trusts Javadi to complete anintubation on a man who has been shot in the chest with a nail gun and she succeeds, much to the chagrin of Santos, who frustrates the team with her brash and overconfident personality. Robby clashes with Mohan over her patient-focused but slow work pace, warning her not to be so afraid of making a mistake that other patients go untreated, advice she tries to pass on to Dennis. Hospital social worker Kiara encourages Robby to get David back to the ER by any means necessary; McKay agrees, having had negative experiences with violent men in the past. Mr. Spencer rips out his breathing tube and has to be restrained while his daughter continues to push for further treatment in the hope her father will improve. The nurses place bets on the whereabouts of a stolen ambulance, and follow its progress on the news. Robby continues to monitor Mr. Spencer in his final hours and is unable to push the thoughts of Adamson's death from his mind. He imparts advice he received from Adamson to Mr. Spencer's children, who grow closer during the heartrending wait for their father to pass. King and Mohan treat a five-month-old baby, and support a single father when his daughter is discovered to have animperforate hymen, while Heather prepares to administer amedical abortion to seventeen-year-old Kristi. Jenna tries to make amends with Nick's family. Santos's poorbedside manner with Jenna leads her to criticism from Mohan, and she also experiences a setback when she ordersBPAP for a patient without clearing it with Langdon, which almost results in the patient's death. Dana and Whitaker have a challenging experience trying to medicate a distressed mental-health patient, while Javadi impresses McKay when treating a trans woman with a cut on her arm. Mohan earns Collins's praise for her empathetic practice with her sickle-cell patient. McKay reveals that she is a former addict who had previously lost custody of her son, which encourages her patient to open up about her own struggles; however, Javadi's naive overstepping causes the patient to leave, and McKay warns her of the importance of listening to patients. Jake, the son of Robby's ex-girlfriend with whom he has a familial relationship[9] briefly visits The Pitt and is welcomed by the other staff. When Langdon performs an unconventional airway clearance on a young man whose recenttonsil surgery becomes a life-threatening hemorrhage, Robby informs him that he has recommended him for a prestigious upcoming fellowship. Whitaker receives positive feedback from King, Robby, and Mohan about his work with several patients. After a disagreement with Langdon over how best to stabilize a man struck by a seizure, Santos's confrontational personality is called out again, and she considers complaining to Robby. King treats Ginger, an older lady brought in following a fall, and offers advice to her daughter who shows signs ofcaregiver fatigue. Ginger's daughter goes to park her car and does not return. Collins discovers that Kristi is one week over the legal cutoff for a medication abortion, but Robby takes over and manipulates the ultrasounds so that the fetus appears just under the cutoff age. The stolen ambulance crashes, and the team treat the twofrat boys responsible. Santos is humbled when she accidentally drops a scalpel into the foot of Yolanda Garcia, a surgeon to whom she had been ingratiating herself. Nick's parents continue to struggle to accept the death of their son, while Collins treats a young man withtesticular torsion and is encouraged by his relationship with his mother, which helps her start to come to terms with her own pregnancy. Santos and Langdon treat a patient withneurocysticercosis, as King struggles with what to do about Ginger, who is still waiting for her daughter to return. Javadi is embarrassed when her mother arrives to see a patient. Gloria tells Robby that, if patient satisfaction scores don't improve, she will have to consider bringing in a corporate management firm to take over The Pitt. Kristi locks herself in a bathroom and refuses to leave with Eloise; Eloise and Kristi's aunt Lynette fight outside the bathroom and shove Collins away when she tries to intervene. | |||||

Following a frank discussion with Collins, Kristi's mother consents to the abortion. King's experience caring for her sister is an asset when Langdon has difficulty supporting anautistic patient with a sprained ankle. The team treat a gentleman suffering from a heart attack and call in theECMO team for assistance, which triggers Robby's memories of Dr. Adamson receiving the same intervention. He later argues with Collins over his treatment of Mohan and the other staff. Mohan and Javadi treat aninfluencer with suspectedschizophrenia, but Mohan disregards instructions, carries out further investigations and discovers that the patient hasmercury poisoning from a contaminated face cream. The wife of Santos's patient confesses that she has been drugging her husband withprogesterone to dull his sex drive because she believes he is molesting their daughter. When the daughter does not want to discuss the situation, Santos threatens the incapacitated father, citing previous experiences with men who abuse their positions of trust. Collins returns to work without disclosing her miscarriage. The team are unable to save Amber, a six-year-old drowning victim. McKay and Dana grow concerned about the relationship between Piper, a young woman withchlamydia, and her overly-controlling boss, believing she may be a victim ofsex trafficking. Santos shares concerns about Langdon's handling ofLibrium with Garcia, who dismisses her concerns. Javadi impresses her mother by determining that one of her patients' symptoms were caused by a spider bite rather than herCrohn's disease. A patient withTwiddler's syndrome reveals he was part of theFreedom House Ambulance Service and was a friend of Dr. Adamson. When informed of Adamson's death, he mourns but stays positive in emphasizing how much he contributed to the world. Ginger's daughter returns, having fallen asleep in her car, and King and Kiara help them to access homecare services to ease her workload. Collins confides to Dana that she suffered a miscarriage, but returns to work anyway. Robby tries to console his team after the death of Amber. McKay makes a final attempt to have Piper admit to being sexually trafficked, but fails, and Piper is discharged alongside her "boss". Dana has to intervene as a fight breaks out in the waiting room, where a woman loses a tooth and both women must be admitted to the ER. Santos makes a quick call to stop anMDMA overdose patient from seizing, but her decision to act alone and not call in Langdon enrages him, causing him to launch into an aggressive and personal verbal attack on Trinity. In turn, Robby lectures Langdon on his behaviour, and failing to act as a better teacher to Santos. Whitaker receives a heartfelt apology from the homeless psychiatric patient who urinated on him, leading to him decide to join The Pitt's "street team". Two victims of a car crash are admitted to The Pitt, including Paula, who was seen by McKay earlier in the day. Paula is discovered to have blacked out while driving due tosepsis caused byendometritis, and Collins suggests that McKay may have missed the septicemia in Paula's earlier exam due tofatphobia. Doug, the patient who complained of long wait times, threatens reception staff and leaveswithout medical clearance. As Dana goes outside to smoke, Doug sucker-punches her to the ground. | |||||

Robby treats Dana for what turn out to be minor injuries, but the nursing team is left shaken by the incident, and Gloria is unable to allay their concerns. A whole-body burn victim is brought into the ER in critical condition, and Whitaker tries to support the victim's emotionally devastated wife, despite a pessimistic outlook from Langdon. Meanwhile, McKay's son Harrison arrives at the ER alongside his father, her ex-partner Chad, who has been injured in a skateboarding accident. McKay refers to Chad's new girlfriend Chloe as part of the reason why McKay wears an ankle monitor. King and Mohan bond as they treat a young stroke victim, but King becomes concerned she lacks the "special sauce" to become a great doctor. Javadi becomes angry with the father of a teenager who was hit in the eye by a baseball, feeling he is prioritising his son's baseball career over his health concerns. Tensions continue between Santos and Langdon, with Robby struggling to mediate. He comforts her and Collins takes Robby's advice to go home early to relax. A disagreement between Mohan and Whitaker arises when they treat a man who Mohan believes is seekingmorphine. Santos is concerned with the repercussions of reporting Langdon and speaks to Garcia and Robby about her concerns. Langdon frantically calls Robby for help. McKay and Javadi treat a woman who experienced an esophageal hemorrhaging while in recovery. She is treated by draining the blood and using a medical balloon to stop the bleeding. McKay confronts Chloe over custody of her son. Dana tells Robby that she is leaving the Pitt after being punched. News comes in from Pittfest, where Robby's stepson Jake and his girlfriend are attending, that there is an active shooter there. | |||||

editOn March 26, 2024,Max gave production a 15-episode series order forThe Pitt. The series is created and showrun byR. Scott Gemmill who is also an executive producer alongsideNoah Wyle,John Wells, Erin Jontow, Simran Baidwan, and Michael Hissrich.[1] Production companies involved with the series areJohn Wells Productions andWarner Bros. Television. The pilot is also written by Gemmill.[10]
On February 14, 2025, Max renewed the series for a second season.[4]
Casting
editUpon the series order announcement, Wyle was also cast to star.[1] On July 12, 2024,Tracy Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Supriya Ganesh,Fiona Dourif,Taylor Dearden,Isa Briones,Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez, andKatherine LaNasa joined the cast as series regulars.[11] On August 14, 2024,Shawn Hatosy,Michael Hyatt,Jalen Thomas Brooks, Brandon Mendez Homer, Kristin Villanueva, Amielynn Abellera, Alexandra Metz, Krystel V. McNeil, and Deepti Gupta were cast in recurring capacities.[5]
Prosthetics
editSpecial effects company Autonomous FX created many of the prosthetics forThe Pitt, including a degloved foot shown in "7:00 A.M.", makeup for a full-body burn victim in "4:00 P.M.", and a vaginal canal and newborn baby for a birth scene in "5:00 P.M.". The birth rig had originally been designed for the Showtime TV showSMILF (2017) and had later been used for the Amazon Prime miniseriesDead Ringers (2023).[12]
ER lawsuit
editOn August 27, 2024, it was reported that the estate ofER creatorMichael Crichton, represented by his widow Sherri, had sued Warner Bros. Television, Wells, Wyle, and Gemmill—all of whom had been involved in the earlier series—over breach of contract, claiming thatThe Pitt was a reworking of a planned sequel toER that the estate had not approved, and that Crichton should be credited as creator ofThe Pitt.[13] On November 4, 2024, Warner Bros. Television's lawyers responded to the lawsuit by filing for a motion to dismiss, claiming that it is "a completely different show".[14]
Release
editThe Pitt premiered onMax on January 9, 2025, with the first two episodes available immediately and the rest debuting on a weekly basis until April 10.[2]
Reception
editThe review aggregator websiteRotten Tomatoes reported a 93% approval rating with an average rating of 8.1/10, based on 44 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "Setting the trials and tribulations of hospital life on a timer,The Pitt combines multiple tried-and-true formulas to create a bracingly fresh medical drama."[15]Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 76 out of 100 based on 26 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[16]
In a positive review written forThe New Republic, Phillip Maciak praised the contrasting pacing of the show's plotlines.[17] The show has been well received by the medical community, in part due to its accurate portrayal of medicine and emergency room conditions.[18]

Jake is not Robby's stepson; Robby dated Jake's mother for a couple of years a couple of years ago and it formed this lovely friendship that is about as close to a familial bond as he knows and he invests a lot in that relationship.
