Tetradesmus is agenus ofgreen algae in the familyScenedesmaceae.[2] Species ofTetradesmus are found in a variety of habitats, includingfresh water andbiological soil crusts in deserts.[3]

Taxonomy
editThe genusTetradesmus was described byGilbert Morgan Smith, containing the single speciesTetradesmus wisconsinensis. It was not universally accepted;Robert Hippolyte Chodat synonymized the genus intoScenedesmus, whileGeorge Stephen West accepted the genus as separate fromScenedesmus.[4]
In the 2000s, molecular data revealed found thatScenedesmus waspolyphyletic.Scenedesmus was subsequently split up into several genera, corresponding to the formersubgeneraScenedesmus,Desmodesmus, andAcutodesmus.[4] AsTetradesmus species are phylogenetically closely related to species once placed inScenedesmus subgenusAcutodesmus, the genusAcutodesmus was raised to genus rank andTetradesmus was placed as a synonym ofAcutodesmus.[5] However, since the nameTetradesmus was published before the genus combinationAcutodesmus was made, this meant that the nameTetradesmus hadpriority Therefore, species inAcutodesmus were renamed toTetradesmus.[6]
