The Shangri-La's are still touring apparently ask them. Ive seen dates for a combined concert featuring the Shangri-La's The Coasters and The Drifters.
Neither Weiss sister has anything to do with them, nor did the Gansers when they were alive, nor does Shadow Morton. The "Shangri-Las" are a generic oldies act that plays three actual Shangri Las songs in their set at most. As far as I know, no one in the group had any career of note at all.````
- Re the above two unsigned comments - the legal dispute between the original Shangri-Las and the group put together later by Fox (who claimed to own the rights to the name) is mentioned in the article, but perhaps could do with some expansion. The claim that Mary Weiss was part of any "Shangri Las" shows after 1989 is untrue. When she played at Atlantic Antic, she said onstage that the last time she played in New York was the 1977 CBGB show and I've never seen her mention any reunion shows other than that one and the 89 show. In fact, she has frequently said that she had no involvement in music at all except those shows. There were other reunion shows in the Seventies beside the CBGB one. The Shangri-Las performed on Gus Gossert's oldies show in Hempstead, New York in 1971 and at the New York Academy of Music in February 16 and 17, 1973.Robnov—Precedingundated comment added01:51, 10 June 2009 (UTC).Reply
I've seen it reported that the Shangri Las were advertised as being part of the latter show, but according to Mary Weiss, they didn't play at that show. It's possible that the advertising was a mistake, that a fake group of Shangri Las played, or that Mary Weiss' memory is wrong. I wouldn't say that any reunion other than the 1977 one definitely happened unless there's a contemporary review of the show that says the authentic Shangri Las played.71.190.94.94 (talk)06:58, 29 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
The 7 minute demo might be a myth. Mary Weiss said that while it was longer than the single, it wasn't that long. There's a three minute version on YouTube-the single is under two and a half minutes-that could be the same recording as the single, but it fits descriptions I've read of the demo. I read that Patti Smith heard The Shangri-Las perform Gloria (In Excelsis Dio) on The Ed Sullivan Show. Although now ancient history, performing on Ed Sullivan was, in its day, one of the most prominent paths to stardom (or superstardom). (like performing in Carnegie Hall for maybe an earlier generation of talent) It was a noteworthy achievement. (and Patti Smith's rendition of Gloria, inspired by theirs, was a big hit.) There is confusion between sources over whether the two pairs of sisters were Jewish or Catholic.This source says: "Although it’s likely that they were not Jewish (the Weiss girls spent time in Catholic school), some fans and scholars claim they were ...". An academic dissertationhere, based on cited sources, says: "The Shangri-Las were not Jewish. The Ganser family were Catholics of Austrian descent, and Mary Ann and Marguerite attended Sacred Heart School in Cambria Heights until the eighth grade, graduating in 1962. The Weiss family were also Catholic. Mary Weiss attended a Catholic grammar school, and a lengthy interview on the Norton Records website contains a photo from Mary’s private collection showing Mary dressed up for her confirmation." However, one obituary of Mary Weisshere states: "She attended Catholic school and then Andrew Jackson high school. At Jackson high, Mary, then 15, and Betty, two years older, joined with the 16-year-old twins Mary Ann and Marge (Marguerite) Ganser to form a singing group (an all-Jewish one)...".
