Stuart Feldman is an American computer scientist. He is best known as the creator of thecomputer software programMake. He was also an author of the firstFortran 77compiler, was part of the original group atBell Labs that created theUnixoperating system,[1] and participated in development of theALTRAN andEFL programming languages.
Feldman is the president ofSchmidt Sciences. He was previously Chief Scientist atSchmidt Futures,[2] and was a member of the dean's External Advisory Board at theUniversity of Michigan School of Information.[3] He was previously Vice President, Engineering, East Coast, atGoogle, and before that Vice President of Computer Science atIBM Research. Feldman has served on the board of theComputing Research Association (CRA) and of theAssociation to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). He was chair ofACMSIGPLAN and founding chair of ACM SIGecom. He was elected the President of the ACM in 2006.[4][5] Feldman is also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board ofACM Queue,[6] a magazine he helped found withSteve Bourne. He has also served on the editorial boards ofIEEE Internet Computing and IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering.He received anA.B. inastrophysical sciences fromPrinceton University and aPh.D. inapplied mathematics from theMassachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2010 theUniversity of Waterloo awarded him an Honorary Doctorate of Mathematics.[7]
Feldman became aFellow of theIEEE in 1991,[8]Fellow of theACM in 1995,[9] andFellow of theAAAS in 2007.[10] In 2003, he was awardedACM's Software System Award for his creation ofMake.[11]
