Spodnje Roje (pronounced[ˈspoːdnjɛˈɾoːjɛ]) is a small settlement in theMunicipality of Žalec in east-centralSlovenia. It lies on the left bank of theSavinja River southwest of Žalec. The area is part of the traditional region ofStyria. The municipality is now included in theSavinja Statistical Region.[2]
The nameSpodnje Roje literally means 'lower Roje'; the elevation of the village is about 3 meters (9.8 ft) lower than that of neighboringZgornje Roje (literally, 'upper Roje'). The two villages were attested in historical sources in 1350 asRoͤdein in 1350,zu Royach in 1402, andzu Rayach in 1436, among other spellings. The name comes from the common nounroja 'ditch, drainage canal', referring to a damp meadow or field drained for cultivation. The noun was borrowed into Slovene fromFriulianròja 'drainage canal'.[3]
