Samar al-'Aṭṭār

Samar al-'Aṭṭār (born 1945) is aSyrian writer, novelist and translator.[1]

She was born inDamascus and studied at theUniversity of Damascus, earning aBA in Arabic literature and anMA in English, and then received a second MA in English fromDalhousie University. In 1973, she received aPhD from theState University of New York at Binghamton. She taught Arabic and English in Canada, the United States,Algeria andGermany. She later taught Arabic studies at theUniversity of Sydney.[1]

She published her first novelLina: A Portrait of Damascene girl in 1982. It was followed byThe House on Arnus Square in 1988.[1] She translated these two novels into English herself.[2] She has also published scholarly essays, textbooks on teaching Arabic and translations of Arabic poetry.[1]
