Reuven Firestone

Reuven Firestone is an Americanacademic andhistorian of religion, who serves as the Regenstein Professor in Medieval Judaism and Islam at theHebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion's Skirball Campus inLos Angeles and Affiliate Professor of Religion at theUniversity of Southern California.[1]

Biography

Firestone was born inNorthern California and has lived with his family inIsrael,Egypt, andGermany.[1] He regularly lectures in universities and religious centers throughout theUnited States,Europe, theMiddle East, andAsia.[1] He has initiated and continues to be involved in numerous projects and initiatives which bring togetherJews,Muslims, andChristians, Jews andArabs, andIsraelis andPalestinians.[1]

Firestone earned hisB.A. atAntioch College, hisM.A. andRabbinic ordination from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1982,[1] and was awarded hisPh.D. inArabic andIslamic studies fromNew York University in 1988. His scholarship focuses onJewish studies, theHebrew Bible and itsexegesis, theQuran and its exegesis,Islamic–Jewish relations,religious phenomenology,comparative religion, andinterfaith dialogue.[1] He has researched and written extensively on the topics ofreligious violence andholy war inIslam andJudaism.[2][3]

He is currently recipient of theAlexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship inBerlin and Sigi Feigel Visiting Professorship for Jewish Studies at theUniversity of Zürich.[1] He served as vice president of the Association for Jewish Studies (AJS) and president of the International Qur’anic Studies Association (IQSA).[1]
