The docks occupy the formersound betweenBarry Island and the mainland. The contractors built dams to connect each end of the island to the mainland, drained or pumped the water from the site and excavated it. They used the material to level the area around the docks and for the core ofbreakwaters to protect the entrance. The works included a basin with gates at each end, which served as a lock between the sea entrance and the docks, the dock walls and quays, coal loading equipment and railways to deliver coal from the mines to the docks. A second dock and second entrance lock were added in 1898. TheBarry Dock Offices were built in 1897–1900 by Arthur E. Bell, architect, of Cardiff and Barry, whose father, James Bell, was resident engineer of The Barry Railway Co. (Full article...)

A cow is analogous to anA unit, i.e. a locomotive with a cab, and a calf to aB unit, i.e. a powered, cablessroad locomotive. That is, the cow and calf are each equipped with at least oneprime mover for propulsion. A cow–calf set is distinct from aslug-and-mother set in that a cow and a calf are each independently powered while aslug has no prime mover and instead is dependent on power from itsmother unit. Like the earlyEMD FT locomotives, cow–calf sets were typically built as mated pairs, with the cow and calf sharing a number. However this was not always the case, as over time many of the sets were broken up and couplers added to aid with versatility. (Full article...)

The old coal mining sheave wheel, now featured in the centre ofRadstock, in front of theRadstock Museum TheSomerset Coalfield in northernSomerset, England is an area wherecoal was mined from the 15th century until 1973. It is part of a largercoalfield which stretched into southernGloucestershire. The Somerset coalfield stretched fromCromhall (Gloucestershire) in the north to theMendip Hills in the south, and fromBath in the east toNailsea in the west – a total area of about 240 square miles (622 km2). Most of thepits on the coalfield were concentrated in theCam Brook,Wellow Brook andNettlebridge Valleys and aroundRadstock andFarrington Gurney. The pits were grouped geographically, with clusters of pits close together working the same coal seams often under the same ownership. Many pits shared the trackways and tramways which connected them to theSomerset Coal Canal or railways for distribution.
The early pits wereadits where coal outcropped orbell pits where coal was close to the surface. These methods were abandoned when deep seams were mined. The deepest shaft on the coalfield was at the Strap mine at Nettlebridge which reached 1,838 feet (560 m). Flooding and coal dust explosions in some mines required improved ventilation and pumping engines. Several pits closed in the 19th century as the coal was worked out. Those that survived until 1947 became part of theNational Coal Board, but the expense of improving equipment and working conditions meant that these became uneconomical and the last pit closed in 1973. There is still evidence of the mine workings, with the remains of buildings, spoil heaps and tramways in the area. (Full article...)

The rotor of a modernsteam turbine , which convertssteam (heat)energy intokinetic (mechanical) energy. The steam path is from the smallest blade, expanding through progressively larger blade elements. Steam turbines are used inpower plants to extractmechanical work frompressurized steam and benefit from their high efficiency and high power-to-weight ratio compared to other technologies, leading to their widespread deployment fromelectricity generation tomarine propulsion.
After 34 years at NASA, Jackson had earned the most senior engineering title available. Realizing that she could not earn further promotions without becoming a supervisor, she accepted a demotion to become a manager of the Federal Women's Program in the NASA Office of Equal Opportunity Programs, as well as of the Affirmative Action Program. In this role, she worked to influence both the hiring and promotion of women in NASA's science, engineering and mathematics careers. She was portrayed byJanelle Monáe as a lead character in the 2016 filmHidden Figures. This picture, taken in 1980, shows Jackson working at NASA Langley.

AQR code, short forquick-response code, is a type of two-dimensionalmatrix barcode invented in 1994 byMasahiro Hara of theJapanese companyDenso Wave for labelling automobile parts. It features white and black squares within a square grid featuringfiducial markers on the corners, readable by imaging devices like cameras, and processed usingReed–Solomon error correction until the image can be appropriately interpreted. The required data is then extracted from patterns that are present in both the horizontal and the vertical components of the QR image. (Full article...)
