Peter Murray Simons,FBA (born 23 March 1950[citation needed]) is aBritish retiredphilosopher and academic. From 2009 to 2016, he wasProfessor ofMoral Philosophy atTrinity College Dublin;[1] he is nowprofessor emeritus.[2] He is known for his work withKevin Mulligan andBarry Smith onmetaphysics and the history ofAustrian philosophy.[3] Since 2018 he is visiting professor at theUniversity of Italian Switzerland.[4]

Simons studied at theUniversity of Manchester, and has held teaching posts at theUniversity of Bolton, from which he holds an honorary doctorate, theUniversity of Salzburg, where he is Honorary Professor of Philosophy, and theUniversity of Leeds. He has been President of theEuropean Society for Analytic Philosophy and is current director of theFranz Brentano Foundation.

His research interests includemetaphysics andontology, the history of logic, the history of Central European Philosophy, particularly in Austria and Poland in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the application of metaphysics to engineering and other non-philosophical disciplines. He is the author or co-author of five books and over 290 articles.
