Military career
editEducated atKing William's College, Downward was commissioned into theSouth Lancashire Regiment in 1943 and served in North West Europe during theSecond World War.[1] He also took part in theBerlin Airlift in 1949 and later saw action in theKorean War.[1] He became commanding officer of the 1st Battalion theLancashire Regiment in 1966 and in that role was deployed toAden during theAden Emergency.[1] He went on to be commander of theBerlin Infantry Brigade in 1971, commandant of theSchool of Infantry in 1974 and General Officer CommandingWest Midlands District in 1976 before retiring in 1979.[2]
In 1953, he married Hilda Hinckley Wood; they had two sons.[1] Following the death of his first wife, he married Mary Boykett Proctor (née Allwork).[1]
In retirement he was Lieutenant Governor of theRoyal Hospital Chelsea, and then Governor of theMilitary Knights of Windsor.[1] He died on 18 October 2014.[3]
