Israel – country in the Middle East, on the southeastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea and the northern shore of the Red Sea. TheState of Israel (Medinat Yisrael) came into existence as thehomeland for the Jewish people at thetermination of Mandatory British Palestine on 14 May 1948, through theIsraeli Declaration of Independence.[1]This was followed by massive migration of Jews from bothEurope and theMuslim countries to Israel, and ofArabs from Israel, contributing to the extensive and still ongoingArab–Israeli conflict.Israel'sfinancial capital andtechnology center isTel Aviv[2] and the proclaimed capital isJerusalem, although the state's sovereignty over the city of Jerusalem isinternationally unrecognized.[3][4] About 43% of theworld's Jews live in Israel today, the largest Jewish community in the world.[5]
