Mewari is anIndo-Aryan language of theRajasthani languages group. It is spoken by about five million speakers inRajsamand,Bhilwara,Udaipur,Chittorgarh andPratapgarh districts ofRajasthan state andMandsaur,Neemuch districts ofMadhya Pradesh state of India.
There are 31consonants, 10vowels and 2diphthongs in Mewari.Intonation is prominent.Dental fricative is replaced byglottal stop at initial and medial positions.Inflection andderivation are the forms ofword formation. There are two numbers—singular and plural, two genders—masculine and feminine, and three cases—simple, oblique, and vocative.Case marking is partlyinflectional and partlypostpositional.Concord is ofnominative type in theimperfective aspect butergative in theperfective aspect.[2] Nouns are declined according to their endings.Pronouns are inflected for number, person, and gender. Third person is distinguished not only in gender but also in remote-proximal level. There are threetenses—present, past, and future; and fourmoods. Adjective are of two types—marked or unmarked. Threeparticiples are there—present, past, and perfect.[3] It hasSOV word order.Mewari is a prominent language inMewar region ofRajasthan.
