In some versions of theRamayana such as theKrittivasi Ramayana,Mahiravana, is the brother of[1] the rakshasa kingRavana. He secretly carried awayRama and his brotherLakshmana to the nether-world, consulted his friends, and decided to sacrifice the life of the two divine brothers at the altar of his chosen deity, goddessMahamaya. However,Hanuman saved their lives by decapitating Mahiravana, and destroying his army.

editTheMairavan charitra was written inTelugu inKavya style in the 16th century by Adithya kavi.[2]
The story of Mahiravana was made into a Telugu film in 1940 by Ghantasala Balaramaiah entitledMahiravana. The veteran actorVemuri Gaggaiah played the role of Mahiravana.[3] The legend was also featured in the 2018 animated filmHanuman vs Mahiravana, released in Hindi and Tamil and in seris TheLegend of Hanuman Season 5 where we get to know more about Ahiravan's world.
