Club career

edit

Shrewsbury Town

edit

Rodgers joinedShrewsbury Town at 17.[5] He first established himself as a goal-scorer during the2000–01 season, as he bagged seven goals in 27 games (half of which were as asubstitute). Three of his goals came againstRochdale in a 7–1 romp atSpotland on 24 February.[6] The2001–02 season showed Rodgers' potential, as he hit 22 goals in 41 games, this time never being used as a substitute.

In2002–03 he hit twenty goals in 47 games. Rodgers also played in the club's giant-killing overPremier LeagueEverton in theFA Cup,[7] but despite this Shrewsbury sufferedrelegation out of theEnglish Football League having finished bottom of theThird Division. At the end of the season the club insisted that Rodgers was 'not for sale';[8] this was proved to be true whenFirst DivisionCrewe Alexandra had a £200,000 bid for Rodgers rejected by managerJimmy Quinn.[9]Hull City also had a £200,000 bid of their own rejected, as Quinn persuaded Rodgers to remain inShropshire.[10] Earlier in the season there was also unconfirmed speculation thatSouthampton had offered as much as £600,000 for the player.[11][12]

Despite being limited to 26 league starts in2003–04, he still bagged fifteen goals in his 41 games. He also scored both goals pastBarnet in the play-off semi-finalaggregate victory that took Shrewsbury into theplay-off final withAldershot Town at theBritannia Stadium. The final itself went to apenalty shoot-out. Though Rodgers missed hispenalty, Town won the match as all three Aldershot penalty-takers missed theirs.[13] In2004–05, his final season with the "Shrews", he managed just eight goals in forty games. However, he had long become a fan favourite atGay Meadow as he scored 67 goals in 204 appearances for the Shropshire side in all competitions, also managing four clubhat-tricks.

Crewe Alexandra

edit

Rodgers turned down Shrewsbury's offer of a one-yearcontract,[14] and was initially linked with a move toSPL high-flyersHibernian.[15] Instead he moved toChampionship clubCrewe Alexandra on a two-year contract for a tribunal-decided fee in July 2005.[16] Shrewsbury received £100,000 from the tribunal with two add-ons of £20,000 based on appearances; however, due to his brief spell at Crewe, Shrewsbury only received the first of these. Crewe went on to suffer relegation in2005–06, and though Rodgers was limited to six goals in his 26 games, he was forced to come off the bench in half of these games.

Despite being popular with supporters,[17] he was never a favourite ofDario Gradi,[18] and was third-choice behind free-scoringLuke Varney andNicky Maynard at the start of the2006–07 season. Rodgers asked for atransfer to a club that would provide him with regular football,[18] and in January 2007, after just 39 appearances and 9 goals, he moved to local rivalsPort Vale for a £30,000 fee. This came after he chose to sign for Vale ahead ofPaul Sturrock'sSwindon Town, who had also agreed a fee with Crewe;[19] as well asChester City;[20] and an unnamed League Two club who offered £40,000 for the striker.[21]

Port Vale

edit

He got injured after just three appearances for the "Valiants" and only played a total of eight games before the end ofthe season, though he still managed to score three goals. His first goal for the club came against Crewe in a 3–0 win atVale Park. During the2007–08 season, Rodgers was the club'stop scorer with twelve goals in 41 games, but famously missed two penalties in Vale's defeat toSouthern Football League minnowsChasetown in the Second Round of theFA Cup.[22][23]

Unhappy on the club's bench,[24] in November 2008 there was talk of Rodgers moving toYeovil Town, yet the move stalled as the two clubs had difficulties reaching a transfer fee.[25] However, aloan deal was made which would take Rodgers to Yeovil until the Januarytransfer window,[26] when the club would have the option of purchasing him for £30,000 fee, with a 10% sell-on clause (an offer Yeovil bossRussell Slade described as "the final throw of the dice").[27][28] Despite all this, when January came he was released from his contract by mutual consent,[29] having had a disagreement with managerDean Glover.[30] Glover claimed the decision was motivated by a desire to free up the wage bill.[31]

Yeovil Town

edit

Rejecting an approach fromNorthampton Town,[32] Rodgers instead signed withYeovil Town until the end of the season.[33] He left the club at the end of his contract, having scored three goals in 22 games for theLeague One club.

Notts County

edit

After leaving Yeovil, Rodgers had planned to remain in League One,[34] but instead signed forNotts County in July 2009 on a two-year deal.[35] Rodgers made a slow start to the season, making eight appearances without scoring, only to break out of the barren spell with a hat-trick pastLincoln City on 29 September.[36] He played in 42 league matches for Notts County, scoring 13 league goals in helping the club to gainpromotion out ofLeague Two.

At the end of the season it was reported that Rodgers was set to leave Notts County to join former Magpies' bossHans Backe atNew York Red Bulls,[37] a move his club permitted.[38][39] However, this move was put in jeopardy after his initial application for a USwork permit was turned down.[40] Nevertheless, Backe was confident that Rodgers would join the club in the January 2011 transfer window,[41] and after Rodgers had reached an agreement with Notts County for a mutual termination of his contract atMeadow Lane,[42][43] the move did go through as predicted.

New York Red Bulls

edit

After a lengthy process, Rodgers eventually signed withMajor League Soccer clubNew York Red Bulls in January 2011.[44] He made his MLS debut two months later, in a goalless draw with theColumbus Crew.[45] The following month, Rodgers scored his first two goals andassistedstrike-partnerThierry Henry in a 3–0 win over theSan Jose Earthquakes.[46][47] For this feat he was named as the MLS 'player of the week'.[48] Rodgers told reporters that "this is the happiest I've been in football."[49] He scored nine goals in 23 league games, ashead coachHans Backe tended to select Rodgers ahead ofUSA internationalJuan Agudelo as Henry's strike partner. This was despite Rodgers missing two months of the campaign withplantar fasciitis.[50] His "feisty nature" led him to become a fan's favourite at theRed Bull Arena.[51]

Lillestrøm

edit

On 30 March 2012, the New York Red Bulls had to end their contract with Rodgers as he was unable to secure a visa to play in the United States,[52] and the same day he signed a contract with NorwegianTippeligaen clubLillestrøm SK lasting till the end of the2012 season.[53] He scored four minutes into his debut two days later, in a 2–2 draw withRosenborg at theÅråsen Stadion.[54] However, after failing to cement his place in the first-team, Rodgers and Lillestrøm decided to part ways during the summer break of Tippeligaen.[55]

Portsmouth

edit

On 16 August 2012,Portsmouth signed Rodgers and nine other players on a one-month contract.[56] Five days later, he scored for the club in a 2–2 draw withColchester United, and also set up a goal forJordan Obita.[57] He scored his first goal atFratton Park on 4 September, in a 2–2 draw withAFC Bournemouth in theFootball League Trophy, before converting the winning penalty in the resulting shoot-out.[58] Five days later, Rodgers scored a 25 yards (23 m)free kick in a 3–0 win overCrawley Town.[59] Rodgers suffered an injury on his left thigh at the end of September, ruling him out action for three weeks.[60]

Return to Shrewsbury Town

edit

On 9 November, he returned to the club where he started his career,Shrewsbury Town, on loan, with the move set to become permanent in the January transfer window.[61] On returning to theNew Meadow, Rodgers said that: "People do say 'don't ever go back', but what's the worst that can happen?"[62] After the move was made permanent in January, Rodgers said that he hoped to stay beyond the end of the2012–13 season.[63] He left the club in March 2013, after scoring just twice in 15 appearances and failing to win a place in the starting line-up in six weeks.[64]

Later career

edit

He signed with SwedishSuperettan clubHammarby IF in July 2013.[65] He was one ofGregg Berhalter's last signings before the American was sacked.[5]

Rodgers signed withConference National clubForest Green Rovers in February 2014.[66][67] He made his debut atThe New Lawn on 8 March as a late substitute forLee Hughes in a 3–2 win overCambridge United.[68] He scored his first competitive goal for Rovers in anFA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round tie 4–1 win overGloucester City on 25 October 2014.[69] On 1 December 2014, it was confirmed that he had agreed to part ways with Forest Green by mutual consent.[70]

He played forSutton Coldfield Town of theNorthern Premier League Premier Division in the2015–16 season.[71] He signed with National League sideSolihull Moors in December 2016.[72] He joined Northern Premier League Premier Division clubHednesford Town in June 2017.[73] He scored one goal in six games for the "Pitmen", picking up oneman of the match award.[74]

In September 2017, Rodgers moved toHighgate United of theMidland League Premier Division, making his debut on 30 September in a 3–1 victory overCoventry Sphinx.[75]

International career

edit

On 4 November 2003, whilst withShrewsbury Town in the Conference National, Rodgers won onecap for England underPaul Fairclough atsemi-professional level.[76] A 2–2 draw withBelgium under-20s, Rodgers provided an assist forSam Ricketts before grabbing a goal himself with a 25 yards (23 m) free kick two minutes before the final whistle.[77]

Style of play

edit

Rodgers was astriker who liked to lie alongside the lastdefender, which led to him being frequently ruledoffside when he timed his run wrong.[5]

Personal and later life

edit

In April 2003, Rodgers was ordered to carry out 100 hours of community service and pay £5,000 in compensation byWarwick Crown Court after afirework set by Rodgers misfired and hit a 16-year-old girl, causing significant damage to the girl's face. Rodgers stated, "It was a complete accident... I am glad it's all over, although it's never been about the sentencing, I was more concerned about the girl."[78] Rodgers was given an 'adult caution for a public order offence' by theSomerset Police Force, after an incident in April 2009.[79] On 1 October 2009, Rodgers was arrested and bailed in connection with a disturbance inNottingham city centre, following a drinking session with his Notts County teammates.[80]
