Kathryn Tappen is an American sportscaster. Tappen works onNBC Sports Group's coverage of theNotre Dame Football,Football Night in America, NHL Network's NHL Now,Golf, as well as theSummer andWinter Olympic Games among others.[1]

Early life and education
editGrowing up, Tappen playedyouth baseball andbasketball on boys' teams because there were no teams for girls where she lived. She also playedgolf,tennis and rancross country. In her senior year of high school atVilla Walsh Academy, Tappen focused exclusively ontrack and eventually received academic and athletic scholarships to attendRutgers University.[2][3]
At Rutgers, Tappen majored injournalism[4] and was a member of the cross-country and track teams until graduating in 2003. She was a four-timeAcademic All-American andBig East All Star as aScarlet Knight.[5][6][7]
Career
editAfter starting inCollege Sports Television, Tappen joinedWJAR in Providence, R.I., where she served as both a weekend anchor and weekday sports reporter.[4] From there she moved toNew England Sports Network (NESN). Tappen then joined theNHL Network in 2011 where she hostedNHL Tonight,[5] and subsequently moved to NBC in the summer of 2014.[8]
In 2014, Tappen won the "Woman of Inspiration" award presented by the Boston Chapter of Women in Sports and Events.[9] She has been nominated for twoNew England Emmy Awards for sports reporting and won anAssociated Press award in 2006 for her featureSwim Meet.[8]
Personal life
editTappen married former NHL defenseman and coachJay Leach in July 2009.[10][11]
