install is ashellcommand that copiesfiles in ways that are particularly useful for implementing asoftware installation process. Features beyond copying include creatingdirectories, settingfile permission, changing file ownership andstrippingexecutable files.
The command is available in manyUnix systems andLinux distributions, but unlike many other long-standing and commonly-used Unix utilities, it is not defined byPOSIX. The command is available forWindows viaUnxUtils.[1]
Two variants exists – one fromGNU and one fromBSD – with the major difference in how the options-D and-d work.
