TheHercules InColor Card (GB222) is anIBM PC compatible8-bit ISAgraphics controller card released in April 1987 byHercules Computer Technology, Inc.[1][2][3] It supported a fixedhardware palette of 64 colours, with the ability to display720 × 350 with 16 colours on anEGA monitor and software redefinablefonts.[4][5][6][1][2]
After the success of the monochromeHercules Graphics Card (HGC) andHercules Graphics Card Plus (HGC+) which gained wide developer support, the market was changing with the release of new colour cards which were becoming increasingly affordable. So Hercules released the InColor to compete primarily withIBM's new high-endVGA card, and also with many existingEGA compatible cards on the market.[7]
The card came with drivers for popular programs likeLotus 1-2-3,AutoCAD,WordPerfect 5.0 orMicrosoft Windows.[7][8] Some compatible games with the card includedKarateka,Microsoft Flight Simulator 3.0 and4,3-D Helicopter Simulator,RAPCON: Military Air Traffic Control Simulator andEco Adventures in the Oceans.[9]
The InColor did not bring the success that Hercules had hoped for, and revenue slowly declined until Hercules was eventually acquired byGuillemot Corporation in October 1999 for $1.5mUSD.
